Reducing Stroke Risk with Fruits and Veggies
The next time someone offers you a fruit or a vegetable, eat up
It turns out that fruits and veggies can help prevent stroke.
Researchers looked closely at eight studies involving more than
257,000 people in Europe, the United States and Japan.
Their findings, published recently the medical journal
The Lancet,.....
show a clear connection between increased consumption of
fruit and vegetables and reduced stroke risk.
What's the magical number? ......                         alt
According to one researcher, people living in developed countries eat only three servings of fruit and vegetables day.
--->Current recommendation are for five or more servings of fruit and veggies each day
If you’re not sure what “a portion is, here’s a sample guide:
If you’re not sure what “a portion is, here’s a sample guide:
- one banana
- one medium-sized apple
- seven cherry tomatoes
- three heaping tablespoonfuls of peas,
  carrots or sweet corn
- a handful of broccoli
The researchers said that increasing our intake to more than
five portions of
fruit and vegetables a day can reduce the risk of
stroke by
26 percent, compared to the risk when we eat less
three servings.
The researchers said the high levels of potassium, folate, fiber
and antioxidants in fruit and vegetables could all help
contribute to their health-boosting qualities.
"Our results provide strong support for these recommendations.
If these goals were achieved, stroke morbidity (illness) and mortality
would be greatly reduced.
Such diet modifications would also reduce other cardiovascular
disease
and some cancers

Red Grapefruit Could Lower Heart Disease Risk
If you like eating grapefruit, you’ll be happy with what researchers in
Israel recently discovered.
In a study published in the online Journal of Agricultural and
Food Chemistry
, researchers from the Hebrew University’s
Hadassah Medical School discuss how eating a red grapefruit
every day .....

could reduce blood fats and protect against heart disease.
Grapefruits and other citrus fruits are known to contain large
amounts of
antioxidants
The new study from Israel is the first to look at different grapefruit
types and their influence on humans who suffer from high blood
cholesterol
(hyperlipidemia) and hardening of the arteries
(atherosclerosis).  Both play major roles in heart disease.
Fifty seven ...bypass surgery patients with high
triglycerides
were divided into three groups
---Each group was given a standard diet designed to fight
    hardening of the arteries.
---One group was also told to
eat one red Jaffa grapefruit a day, and
---one group was told to eat one white Jaffa grapefruit a day
---The third group was told to simply follow the standard diet.
The standard eating plan that all groups followed consisted of
----66 percent of calories from carbs,
----25 percent of calories from protein and
---- 9  percent of calories from fat.
The researchers discovered that ......
*
both red and white grapefruit helped to lower LDL (or, bad)
cholesterol
But there was a bit of a surprise......
**  “Only a diet supplemented with red grapefruits was effective in
significantly lowering the level of
… triglycerides, said lead
researcher Shela Gorinstein.
While the scientists assume that the antioxidants found in citrus fruit
were the cause of the lowered blood fats, they could not explain
--->why red and white grapefruits seem to have slightly different effects
More studies will be conducted to help figure out why this difference exists.

Special health note from the Ultimate Citrus Page:
Grapefruits can have a negative effect on medication and the Seville orange may interact the same way with some medicines.
If you are taking medicines replace these fruits by other citrus. Clementines for instance.
Check with your doctor for any possible negative effects with your medication.
